Spider beetles are common pests in food industry, can also infest residential buildings. Appearance: 3 - 4 mm in size, brown, overall appearance like a spider; hence name of family. Adults have long legs and oval shaped, fine velvety golden hairs covered body. Similar to Golden Spider Beetle. Both spider beetles can be pests in warehousing, food production as well as in domestic environments. Can be controlled.

Bed Bug is nocturnal parasite that bites humans and other mammals to feed on their blood. Appearance: Adult Bed Bug is app 5 - 6 mm long, very flattened oval shape, red brown colour that may change to brown. Eggs are small, whitish, laid at a rate 4 - 5. Nymphs resemble adults, translucent when hungry, change to red and brown after feeding. Bed bugs are some of the worst pests you can have in your bedroom. Their bites can cause severe skin reactions. Suspected for disease transmission.

Biscuit Beetle is a small stored product insect pest. Appearance: Size 2 - 3 mm, mid-dark matt brown overall colouration. Larvae are whitish and mobile when first hatched. Can be confused with Woodwarm/Furniture Beetle. Food storage pest, control required.

Blowfly

Blowfly

Blowfly is also known as Bluebottle or Greenbottle Fly. Appearance: App 25 mm wing span, 11 mm in length, bristles on the body, metallic blue or green colour, large eyes. Blowflies are active fliers. Eggs are whitish, app 1.5 mm laid in batches. Larvae are also whitish, up to 18 mm long. Blowflies are health risk due to potential disease transmission; they feed on carcasses. Control important in food premises and may also be required in and around residential buildings.

Booklice

Booklice

Booklice are small insects that prefer warm and humid conditions, e.g. kitchens. Appearance: Colour may vary from yellow to brown, adults 1 - 1.5 mm in size. Nymphs resemble adults. Problem in food industry by contamination of foods, small risk of health problems. Can be controlled when the need arises.

Bristletails

Bristletails

Bristletails are pest insects usually found in bathrooms, pantries and basements. Appearance: Up to 20 mm long, carrot shaped insect covered in scales, 2 very long antennae and 3 bristly tails. In most situations Bristletails are nothing more than nuisance.

Brown House Moth is a frequent flying pest indoors. Appearance: Similar to Clothes Moth in size and appearance; app 5 - 8 mm, shiny gold with dark brown, noticeable fringe of hairs on wings. Wings folded over body at rest. These moths can damage items of fur, feathers and textiles woven of natural fibres. House Moth infestations can be controlled.

Varied Carpet Beetle

Varied Carpet Beetle

Varied Carpet Beetle is one of family Dermestidae, the same as Larder Beetle. Appearance: Adult varied carpet beetles are small with oval body, speckled green-yellow (Glasgow), 2 - 4 mm. Larvae, called woolly bear, app 5 mm before pupal stage, dark brown, covered in bristles. By amateurs commonly misidentified for other beetles of Dermestes genus. Although not known for disease transmission you might not want carpet beetles for damages by their larvae to woollen carpets and textiles.

Cat & Dog Fleas

Cat or dog fleas would likely be the ones to worry about, especially if you have pets. Appearance: Adult size 2 mm, laterally compressed, dark mahogany colour. Larvae are legless, whitish, up to 5 mm long. Irritation caused by flea bites, cat & dog fleas also bite humans. Cat Flea is not implicated in disease transmission, Dog Flea can carry tapeworm. If you have pets first treat him/her using veterinary products before arranging for treatment to your property.

Common Black Ant, in Scotland also called Garden Ant. Common ants are usually just a little more than a nuisance. Appearance: The ants we can frequently see away from the nests are infertile females - ant workers. They forage for food and can enter houses during their foraging exercises. Size 2 - 3 mm, shiny black colour. Elbowed antennae, 6 long legs. A form of ants in mating (summer-time) have wings. Control is necessary where ants become a nuisance indoors.

Both the fly species are very common in Scotland and worldwide. Appearance: Common House Fly is app 6 mm long, wingspan 10 mm, grey/black chequered hairy abdomen, blackish stripes on thorax (the flies' back). Lesser House Fly is slightly smaller, abdomen darker grey or black, 3 less distinct longitudinal stripes on grey thorax. Disease transmission, spoilage of food, nuisance. Control is recommended in food premises and in homes if the flies are in large numbers.

Cluster Fly is an autumn and spring pest in houses, especially those located in rural settings. Cluster flies otherwise live and breed harmlessly out of doors. Appearance: App 6 - 10 mm, large reddish eyes, bristly abdomen, thorax covered with yellow-gold hairs, tessellated abdomen. can be confused for House Fly by amateurs. Control necessary where cluster flies come indoors in large numbers to overwinter in the autumn.

Most people would recognise wasps. German & Common wasps are the 2 most frequently encountered wasp species in Scotland and UK. Appearance: 10 - 20 mm long, noticeable ''wasp waist'', distinctive banding in yellow and black, membranous wings. Care necessary to avoid being stung. Common Clothes Moth is he most frequently encountered of pest moths in Glaswegian homes, widespread worldwide, except for tropics. Appearance: Fore-wing span 4 -7 mm, long thread-like antennae, pale ochre/straw colour of forewings, Fringed hind and fore wings, long legs with spines at joints.Variations found in glasgow appear overall shiny golden brown. Moth larvae cause damages to woollen carpets and textiles made of natural fibres - a good enough reason to control them.

Field and Wood mice can be confused with House mice, all common in Scotland and UK. Appearance: Slightly longer body + head than in House Mouse - app 90 mm, weight app 25 grams. Red tinge to fur. Wood and Field mice can also enter houses but commonly are found in sheds, garages and outhouses. Mouse proofing your property can help prevent infestation. Control indoors is recommended.

Fruit flies are very common outdoors and may come indoors to breed. Appearance: Adult flies app 2 mm in size, greyish with large red eyes. Larvae legless maggots, move to dryer area when fully developed to pupate. Fruit flies are very rapid breeders, potential disease transmission. Essential to control.

German Cockroach

German Cockroach

German Cockroach is the most frequently encountered roach in Glasgow and other Scotland's cities. Also known as Steamfly. Appearance: Yellow/brown with 2 dark brown stripes on the head. Long antennae. Although they do not fly (are good climbers) wings are present. Size 12 -15 mm in adults, nymphs resemble adults but are smaller and lack the wings. German Cockroach is a serious pest, vector of diseases transferable onto humans. Effective pest control by professional is recommended.

Grain Weevil

Grain Weevil is a small insect, pest of grain and cereals, occasionally a kitchen pest. Appearance: Adults 3-4 mm, dark brown, almost black colour. Extended snout. Control important in grain stores and warehouses. You might consider a treatment if you have them in your kitchen.

Human Flea

Human Flea

Human Flea is one of the flea species found in Scotland and across the UK. Nowadays rarer than cat and dog fleas. Appearance: Adults dark brown,app 2 millimetres. Larvae whitish, app 5 mm long. Eggs pearly white, app 0.5 mm. All fleas are parasitic as adults. Their bites cause irritation. Human Flea can also be found on badgers, foxes, hedgehogs and pigs. Professional flea control is highly recommended.

House Dust Mite

House Dust Mite

Dust mites are very common living in domestic dwellings in Scotland and worldwide. Mites are not Insect, they belong to class Arachnida (spiders). Appearance: Tiny, less than 0.5 mm. Gray to pale brown. Difficult to identify without a microscope. Probably responsible for a number of allergic reactions in humans. Dusting, vacuuming and ventilation to reduce humidity first before pest control is considered.

House Mouse

House Mouse

House Mouse can be confused with Wood Mouse or Long-tailed Field Mouse. There's visually little difference but House mice prefer to live indoors. Appearance: Much smaller than rats. Young rat would have larger head and feet in proportion to its general body size. App weight of adult house mouse is 20 grams, app length (head + body) 80 mm. Tail is the same length as head and body. Grey-brown fur with slightly lighter underside. Vector of diseases, damages to property. Control recommended.

Larder Beetle

Larder Beetle

Larder Beetle is one of the genus Dermestes collectively known as hide beetles, generally referred to as Dermestes beetle in pest control. Appearance: Adult beetles are app 8 millimetres long. Their variations with shiney black back in adults and hairy larvae of brownish colour, over 10 mm are frequent pests to Glaswegian homes and food premises. Dermestes beetles may indicate a lack of hygiene or a housekeeping problem. Not known to be a vector of serious diseases. Control recommended.

Norway Rat

Norway Rat

Norway Rat is widespread in Scotland and across UK, also known as Brown Rat or Common Rat. Appearance: Usually brown colour, adults weighing app 500 g (0.5 kg), combined head + body length app 230 mm, Tail is shorter than head and body. Brown rats are vector of serious diseases that can be transferred to humans. Further can damage your property by gnawing and burrowing. Rat infestations require rodent control.

Pharaoh's Ant

Pharaoh's Ant

Pharaoh's Ant is a tropical ant species. In Scotland rarely found in heated buildings only. Appearance: Pale straw-yellow with darker head and abdomen. Size of Pharaoh's Ant worker is app 2 millimetres. Pharaoh's ants may carry disease organisms and can contaminate food and sterile materials. Control is more complex than against Common Ant and requires a professional approach.

Plaster Beetle

Small insect that might occasionally be found on damp plaster, hence the name Plaster Beetle. Appearance: Adult beetles are about 2 mm, grey to brown colour. Due to small size and a common habitat (plaster) by amateurs often wrongly attributed to other insect species. Plaster beetles live on molds. Harmless outside, may indicate a damp situation indoors. Can be controlled.

Oriental Cockroach

Oriental Cockroach

Oriental Cockroach is larger than German Cockroach, both found in Glasgow and other Scotland's cities. Appearance: Actual size of adult is 17 - 30 mm. Nymphs are smaller, live and feed with adults. Dark brown to black colour. Oriental cockroaches can carry disease organisms. Difficult to eradicate. Professional insect control is recommended.

Sewage Fly is a small flying insect, commonly also known as Drain Fly or Filter Fly. Appearance: Adult flies black and hairy. In size very small - about 2 mm. Larvae are slow moving legless grubs. Their presence indoors indicates a likely drainage problem such as a leak or blockage. Drains should be checked first before arranging for a pest control treatment.

Ship Rat

Ship Rat is also known as Black Rat, although the colouration of its fir doesn't have to always be black. Use to be a frequent rodent vermin in major UK's ports. Nowadays less common than Norwegian Rat. Appearance: Average adult Ship Rat weight is about 250 g (0.25 kg), combined head and body length app 200 mm, tail is longer than head + body. Very good climbers. Vector of diseases. If you have rats about you might want to bring in rodent control ASAP.

Silverfish

Silverfish

Silverfish is one of class Insect. Appearance: Silver-grey colour, up to 20 mm long in adults. Nymphs resemble adults, but are smaller and fatter, lack silvery scales on body and the 3 distinctive tail bristles. Presence of Silverfish indicate an underlying problem is dampness. They can damage papers, manuscripts, textiles and some other non-synthetic fibres, starch-rich materials. You might consider getting rid of them.

Springtails

Springtails

Springtails are wingless insects. Appearance: Adults pale grey to nearly black, 2 - 5 mm. Springtail nymphs resemble miniature adults. Characteristic movement up and forward due to springing organ. Springtails are not a significant pest. May indicate dampness. They do not bite humans. Live mainly on decaying vegetable matter and fungi.

White-shouldered House Moth

White-shouldered House moth is quite common in Scotland, however of moderate importance as they rarely attack textiles. Appearance: Adult moths 7 - 9 mm, distict white head and shoulders. Larvae are whitish caterpillars with brown head. An infestation of White-shouldered House Moth may indicate a housekeeping problem.

Woodlice

Woodlice

Woodlice are not classed as Insect, they belong among Crustacea. In Scotland are commonly known as slaters. Appearance: Size in adults 15 mm, slate-grey colour, body very flattened. Casual intruders into buildings, do not breed indoors, associated with dampness. Indoors woodlice cause no damage and are not known for disease transmission.

Woodwarm

Woodwarm

Other name of Woodwarm is Common Furniture Beetle. Appearance:: Adults are dark brown beetles, 3 -5 millimetres long, larvae not normally seen - bore inside wood and timber. 2 mm adult exit holes may be visible on affected timber or furniture. Adult Woodwarm resembles to Biscuit Beetle. If you have Woodwarm infesting your furniture or timber, treatment is strongly recommended.
